چکیده

Urinary estradiol production rates, plasma estradiol, and peripheral conversion of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) to estradiol were explored in patients whose neo plasms made human chorionic gonadotropin and/or human chorionic gonadotropin ßfragments. In five men with choriocarcinoma, estradiol production was elevated, plasma estradiol was high, and DHEAS conversion to estradiol ranged from 0.5 to 11.7%. In six patients with "ectopie" gonadotropin-producing tumors, originating from lung, stomach, and liver, estradiol production was elevated to a lesser degree. Sera from 154 of 864 patients (16.8%) with a wide variety of advanced neoplastic disorders were noted to have minimal elevations of human chorionic gonadotropin ßsubunit in their sera but had normal luteinizing hormone assays. Plasma estra diol levels in these patients were not elevated, and in only one of ten patients studied was there slight elevation of the estradiol production rate. Similarly, in only one of ten patients was there measurable conversion of DHEAS to estradiol. We conclude that, in patients whose neoplastic disorders are associated with major elevations of human chorionic gonado tropin, there is concordant extragonadal production of estradiol via DHEAS, presumably representing an associated trophoblastic function. However, estrogen production is not a sensi tive tumor marker in those patients whose neoplasms are associated with minimal elevations of human chorionic gonad otropin ßfragments only.

Estrogen Receptor Beta Expression in Melanomas Versus Dysplastic Nevi

Dear Editor-in-ChiefMalignant melanoma is a tumor arising from melanocyte; this tumor rarely occurs before puberty, with higher mortality rate in males and better survival rate in female patients affected by metastatic melanoma (1, 2). These facts propose that a relationship and association may exist between estrogens and melanoma. The effects of estrogens are mediated by...

Identification of CGA as a novel estrogen receptor-responsive gene in breast cancer: an outstanding candidate marker to predict the response to endocrine therapy.

The estrogen receptor (ER) status of breast tumors is used to identify patients who may respond to endocrine agents such as tamoxifen. However, ER status alone is not perfectly predictive, and there is a pressing need for more reliable markers of endocrine responsiveness. Here, we identified the well-known CGA gene (coding for the alpha subunit of glycoprotein hormones) as a new ERalpha-respons...

Imaging features of estrogen-negative breast cancers: a correlation study with human epidermal growth factor type II overexpression

Background: Estrogen-negative breast cancers have different clinical course, prognostic features and treatment response in comparison to estrogen receptor-positive (ER-positive) breast cancers. Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) oncoprotein has found to have a pivotal role in natural cell growth and cell division and is suggested to be directly related to tumor invasiveness in brea...

Progesterone Producing Granulosa Cell Tumor: a Case Report

The granulosa cell tumor is the most common malignant functioning tumor of the ovary. When functional, granulosa tumor almost always are estrogenic although rare tumors are androgenic. Progesterone producing by these tumors has only been reported twice. We report a case of granulosa cell tumor in a 7 years old girl with precocious puberty who represent the first case of progesterone producing b...
